TV Journalist From Philadelphia Killed Covering Shooting In Florida

A Philadelphia-raised TV news reporter was shot and killed while covering an earlier shooting in Florida, his station confirmed.

Dylan Lyons, 24, a Spectrum News 13 reporter died when the suspect in an earlier incident returned to the crime scene and opened fire Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 22, his Orlando station reported Thursday, Feb. 23. A photo journalist from the station was critically injured.

Lyons had been covering an earlier homicide investigation in Pine Hills, just outside of Orlando, when 19-year-old Keith Melvin Moses returned to the scene and opened fire, according to Sheriff John Mina.

In total, Moses killed three people on Wednesday, the sheriff said: Nathacha Augustin, 38; T’yonna Major, 9; and Lyons, who would’ve been 25 next month.

Lyons was raised in Philadelphia and went on to graduate from University of Central Florida with a degree in journalism and political science, his bio on his station's website says. Before joining News 13, Lyons anchored and reported for an ABC local affiliate station in Gainesville, FL. 

He earned the award of "Best Politics/Elections Series" coverage by the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists in 2020. The following year, was was a finalist for "Investigative Reporting."

More than $18,900 had been raised for his family on a GoFundMe as of Thursday morning, where he was remembered as "a happy soul and wonderful person in life."
